Those who invested in Airgain (NASDAQ:AIRG) a year ago are up 102%

Unfortunately, investing is risky - companies can and do go bankrupt. But if you pick the right stock, you can make a lot more than 100%. Take, for example Airgain, Inc. (NASDAQ:AIRG). Its share price is already up an impressive 102% in the last twelve months. It's also good to see the share price up 26% over the last quarter. Unfortunately the longer term returns are not so good, with the stock falling 38% in the last three years.

So let's investigate and see if the longer term performance of the company has been in line with the underlying business' progress.

Check out our latest analysis for Airgain

Because Airgain made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. As you can imagine, fast revenue growth, when maintained, often leads to fast profit growth.

Airgain actually shrunk its revenue over the last year, with a reduction of 25%. So we would not have expected the share price to rise 102%. It just goes to show the market doesn't always pay attention to the reported numbers. Of course, it could be that the market expected this revenue drop.

You can see how earnings and revenue have changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that Airgain shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 102% over the last year. Notably the five-year annualised TSR loss of 6% per year compares very unfavourably with the recent share price performance. We generally put more weight on the long term performance over the short term, but the recent improvement could hint at a (positive) inflection point within the business. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Case in point: We've spotted 4 warning signs for Airgain you should be aware of, and 1 of them can't be ignored.
