The only Sydney red zone still barred from Victoria

Only one Sydney local government area remains a coronavirus red zone as Victorian officials allow thousands more across the state border.

Sydneysiders and interstate Victorians in nine LGAS were given the green light to return as the areas were downgraded to orange zones on Friday.

“That will be great news, I know, for people who are wanting to come home,” Premier Daniel Andrews told reporters.

Blacktown, Burwood, Canterbury Bay, Canterbury Bankstown, Fairfield, inner West, Parramatta and Strathfield are no longer red zones, meaning people from those areas can enter Victoria, however must apply for a permit, take a test within 72 hours of arriving and isolate until receiving a negative result.

But Cumberland LGA, which is home to Berala where a cluster of cases has festered in recent weeks, is the only council area still blocked from the state.

Anyone who has visited the suburb, transit not included, will be classified as part of the LGA.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has previously criticised other state leaders for their border closures, accusing them of “making up” the rules as they went along.

NSW has not reported a locally acquired coronavirus case in five days.

Victoria has gone 16 days without a local case.

Victorian visitor restrictions ease tonight

Greater Brisbane and regional NSW, with the exception of Wollongong and the Blue Mountains, will change from orange zones to green at 6pm, allowing for unrestricted travel.

From 11.59pm, the visitor cap in Victoria will also increase from 15 to 30.

The 15-person limit on home gatherings had been introduced on New Year's Eve, as the state recorded a number of new cases linked to a Black Rock Thai restaurant.

The premier said the cluster has been "run to the ground".
