The Iconic customers warned as Aussie loses $700 in account hack

The online retailer said it would refund customers who had been left out of pocket.

Customers of The Iconic have been fleeced out of hundreds of dollars, after their accounts were reportedly hacked.

A number of the online shopping giant’s customers have claimed their accounts have been fraudulently accessed, and say hackers have used saved credit card details to make purchases in customers’ names.

One Aussie shared that his wife was charged $700 after hackers gained access to her The Iconic account and changed its associated email address.

“No steps were taken to verify this change, leaving her account completely compromised,” the customer said. “The intruder went on to purchase a $700 watch using the credit card linked to the account. This fraud came to light only after we noticed the charge on our credit card statement.”

A number of other customers have made similar reports, with some saying they have lost up to $1,500.

“My account was hacked too. $524 spent on instax film. Email address changed. Shipping address changed to an address in Victoria,” one person said.

“My account was hacked and someone made a purchase of $590 using my saved credit card,” another said. “Got in touch with Iconic but still haven’t heard anything from them. I used to be a loyal customer but will definitely take my business elsewhere after this traumatic experience.”

The Iconic said it had seen an increase in fraudulent activity on its site.

“We have recently seen an increase in fraudulent account login attempts on The Iconic, which our security and fraud teams continue to actively manage, in conjunction with our security partners,” a spokesperson said in a statement.

“We are working with all customers to address these incidents, which are not a result of a data breach at The Iconic. The security of our customer data is of the utmost importance to us and we continue to work with our third-party security partners to protect against all fraudulent activity."

In an email to customers on Tuesday, the retailer encouraged customers to strengthen their account by regularly changing their password.

"Our teams are also proactively intercepting unauthorised access attempts and cancelling any fraudulent orders made, in addition to providing customers with full refunds for any successful orders made that have been dispatched," the spokesperson said.

The Iconic is encouraging any customers who have noticed any unusual activity to contact its customer service team via its Help Centre.
