Australian men spend $59 more on wining and dining their partners than their female counterparts, new research has shown.

And, our taste in dates is growing more extravagant, fuelled by hit television romances like The Bachelor, the research from restaurant booking platform OpenTable has revealed.

Australian men in relationships put aside $216 every month for date nights, or $2,592 a year, while women put aside $157, or $1,884.

Men were also more likely than women to plan a date night at least monthly.

But across both genders, nearly one third of those in relationships agreed that The Bachelor, and the dates Matt Agnew goes on, have had an impact on where they choose to go on a date night.

Romantic Australians are putting aside an average $2,244 for date nights every year and $18.5 billion collectively, citing a need to keep the romance alive.

“Having been in the hospitality business for more than 20 years, OpenTable has seen the role that great food plays in bringing people together, with the dining table an ideal setting to help build and foster relationships,” said Tim Domelow, OpenTable’s senior business development manager for Asia-Pacific.

“[The] research has further backed this, with the data showing the vast majority of Australian couples believe date nights are beneficial in bringing their relationships happiness and relaxation (70 per cent), helping them feel closer and more ‘in love’ with their partner (51 per cent) and enabling them to reconnect and sharing a new experience (48 per cent).”

However, the research also revealed that more than one million Australians currently in relationships have had a relationship break down due to different diets or fights over where to eat.

Who’s spending the most on dates?

Younger Australians spend the most on dinner dates, with Millennials putting aside an average $225 a month, compared to the $169 and $163 spent by Gen X and Baby Boomers respectively.

Aussies in NSW and the ACT ($202 a month) are also spending more than their southern counterparts, with those in Victoria and Tasmania spending a slightly less $201.

Up in the north, those in Queensland are spending $155.

How much does a date on The Bachelor cost?

Candles and wine are nice, but trying to emulate a date from The Bachelor is expensive.

In fact, you’re looking at thousands for some of the most extreme dates on The Bachelor.

Yahoo Finance crunched the numbers and found that for a helicopter ride, gown and private orchestra, love birds are looking at a $4,290 bill.

But that’s nothing compared to a chocolate bath.

Once you’ve filled up the bath with 300 litres of water and bought a nice bottle of champagne, you’re looking at $7,865.

Suddenly a fancy dinner is looking a whole lot more appealing.
