New York hosts a huge lightweight clash on Saturday night as Teofimo Lopez takes on George Kambosos.

The 24-year-old American will put his WBA, WBO, IBF and Ring magazine belts on the line against Kambosos, in a bout between two unbeaten fighters.

Lopez will be making his first title defence since his stunning victory over Vasiliy Lomachenko last year, and the unified lightweight champion goes into Saturday’s fight as the overwhelming favourite.

This is Kambosos’ first shot at a world title. The 28-year-old beat British fighter Lee Selby by split decision at the end of last year to become mandatory for the IBF title.

The bout was going to be broadcast on Triller after the platform won the purse bid, however the IBF found them in default of its contract obligation as a date and location could not be agreed upon.

Lopez vs Kambosos has been due to take place on June 19 after an initial delay, but that date also had to be pushed back after Lopez tested positive for Covid-19 at the start of fight week.

There was then talk of the fight being moved to take place in Australia, with Lopez resisting that, before the fight date was moved again to various venues and to several different dates, due to clashes with other sporting events.

With no breakthrough made, rights to the fight were awarded to the second-highest bidder in the purse bid, Matchroom and DAZN, which put an end to the saga.

Eddie Hearn does not promote either fighter, but he is staging the massive bout this week.

Lopez vs Kambosos fight prediction

Teofimo Lopez has not been in the ring for over a year, but that was his sensational points victory over Vasiliy Lomachenko to stun the world and propel himself right to the top of the sport.

If he is anywhere near those levels again this weekend, he should prove to be too good for George Kambosos. The American has promised to end the fight inside the opening round in the build-up, making it clear he has no intention of this fight going the distance.

While victory inside the first three minutes may prove to be slightly ambitious, Lopez has proved in the past he is capable of devastating early stoppages. He secured the IBF belt in 2019 by stopping Richard Commey inside two rounds, with eight of the 12 knockout victories in his career coming before the fight has reached the third round.

Kambosos boasts an unbeaten record as well, with his last victory coming over Lee Selby in the UK last year to secure a shot at the world titles. This is a real step up in class for Kambosos though, and on paper he cannot match Lopez for either skill or power.

We’re going with Lopez to win by knockout inside the first six rounds, defending his belts and moving on to a potential fight against WBC lightweight champion Devin Haney.

Lopez vs Kambosos weigh-in

The final press conference took place on Wednesday, with the two fighters having to be separated as they exchanged insults on stage.

Kambosos is the underdog for the bout, but he is adamant Lopez is in for a surprise on Saturday night when the fight doesn’t have an early stoppage.

“I’m ready to take everything he’s got in New York City,” the Australian said.

“Let’s see what he does after the first round when I’m still standing there. He says he’s hungry but he’s lying. We’re ready for war.”

Lopez responded: “He can be hungry, but there’s a difference between hungry and starving. I’m starving. I’m a lion and I’m ready to tear this guy up.”

The weigh-in for Lopez vs Kambosos took place on Friday evening - Lopez weighed in at 135 pounds, with Kambosos slightly lighter at 134.4 lbs.
