Yahoo Finance Tennessee WR Jauan Jennings suspended for half of bowl game for stepping on head of Vanderbilt player
Tennessee wide receiver Jauan Jennings will miss the first half of his final college football game.
The SEC announced Wednesday that Jennings has been suspended for the first half of the Vols’ to-be-announced bowl game for “actions against an opposing player” late in Tennessee’s win over Vanderbilt on Saturday.
With 3:06 left in regulation, Jennings tackled Vanderbilt’s Justice Shelton-Mosley out of bounds on a punt return. Shelton-Mosley slid toward the Tennessee bench and Jennings stayed on top of him. While the two were tangled, Shelton-Mosley’s helmet came off. Jennings then stepped on Shelton-Mosley’s head before a scuffle ensued.
After a review of the video, the SEC determined that Jennings “committed a flagrant personal foul.” The conference cited NAA rule 9-6-2 when handing out the suspension:
The suspension is consistent with NCAA Football Playing Rule 9-6-2 which states “If subsequent review of a game by a conference reveals plays involving flagrant personal fouls that game officials did not call, the conference may impose sanctions prior to the next scheduled game.” The Southeastern Conference considers this matter concluded and will have no further comment.
In a statement, Tennessee athletic director Phillip Fulmer said he discussed the matter with SEC commissioner Greg Sankey and that the school will “honor” the conference’s decision.
“Commissioner Sankey shared his perspective on the actions in question, we had a long conversation about the matter, and we will honor the suspension,” Fulmer said. “Jauan has been nothing but outstanding for our team and program this entire season.”
Jennings, a senior, is Tennessee’s leading receiver with 57 catches for 942 yards and eight touchdowns.
The Vols, after a 2-5 start to the season, finished out the regular season with five consecutive victories to get back to a bowl game after back-to-back losing seasons.
