Telstra says it is the first mobile carrier in the world to bring voice-activated, outbound calls to Google Home

  • Telstra has partnered with Google to allow voice-activated calls on Google Home and Google Nest smart speakers.

  • According to Telstra, they are the first mobile carrier in the world to offer this functionality.

  • The voice-activated call functionality is available on Google Home if you're a Telstra mobile customer, but it still can't accept incoming calls.

"Hey Google, call mum."

Telstra claims it is the first mobile carrier in the world to allow calls to be made through Google Home and Nest speaker devices.

The speakers – which use the voice-activated artificial intelligence system, Google Assistant – were able to make voice calls in the US, UK and Canada, but this feature did not involve directly connecting to a telco's network.

Telstra has partnered with Google to launch voice-activated calling on Google Home, Google Home Mini or Nest speakers. So if you're on the Telstra network, have a Google Home (or Nest or Mini) device hooked up to wifi and are signed up to a Gmail account and Google Home App, you can give your friend a call by using your voice.

"This call travels across our network and uses your Telstra mobile phone number, so you can make calls as if you were holding your phone," Telstra said in a statement.

All call charges are included in your Telstra mobile plan – and if you're on a pre-paid plan, you'll need to have credit.

The voice call system, however, isn't available on the Google Nest Hub Max.

Google Home is one of several speakers on the market, such as the Amazon Echo and Sonos.
