As Technology One Limited (ASX:TNE) hits AU$4.0b market cap, insiders may be dismayed about not purchasing higher quantities

Technology One Limited (ASX:TNE) insiders who purchased shares in the last 12 months were richly rewarded last week. The stock climbed by 3.8% resulting in a AU$146m addition to the company’s market value. Put another way, the original AU$249k acquisition is now worth AU$298k.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

Technology One Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

In the last twelve months, the biggest single purchase by an insider was when Non-Executive Chair & Lead Independent Director Patrick Redmond O'Sullivan bought AU$249k worth of shares at a price of AU$10.27 per share. Even though the purchase was made at a significantly lower price than the recent price (AU$12.27), we still think insider buying is a positive. Because the shares were purchased at a lower price, this particular buy doesn't tell us much about how insiders feel about the current share price.

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. Technology One insiders own 14% of the company, currently worth about AU$558m based on the recent share price. Most shareholders would be happy to see this sort of insider ownership, since it suggests that management incentives are well aligned with other shareholders.
