Yahoo Finance Tate Martell opts out of 2020 season after Miami's season opener
Tate Martell’s topsy-turvy football career has taken another turn.
The Miami quarterback is opting out of the 2020 football season, the Miami Herald reported on Friday. Martell had previously been suspended for the Hurricanes’ season-opener over a team matter, so he will finish the year with no playing time.
Martell’s opt-out is hardly a loss for Miami, which has D’Eriq King, N’Kosi Perry and Tyler Van Dyke all on its quarterback depth chart over Martell. However, it does call into question where Martell’s career goes from here, especially when it’s already gone so many places.
Tate Martell’s college football odyssey
Once upon a time, Martell had a bright future. He was Rivals’ No. 2 dual-threat quarterback in the Class of 2017, between Texas A&M starter Kellen Mond and former Alabama starter Tua Tagovailoa. He was the subject of a Netflix series entitled “QB1: Beyond the Lights” and led Las Vegas powerhouse Bishop Gorman to three straight state championships.
Martell had originally committed to Washington at the age of 14, then switched to Texas A&M, then again to Ohio State. Martell backed up Dwayne Haskins for a year after taking a redshirt and appeared poised to take the Buckeyes’ starting spot as a sophomore. And then a young quarterback by the name of Justin Fields decided to transfer to Columbus, which Martell was not very happy about.
After first indicating he would stay in Columbus, Martell entered the transfer portal and left for Miami. That only changed the location of Martell’s quarterback battle loss. Redshirt freshman Jarren Williams beat out Martell for the starting QB job, leading to Martell giving wide receiver a try.
Now in his fourth year in college football, Martell has 29 career passing attempts to his name and won’t get anymore this year. It’s not often you see a quarterback rated as highly as Martell see that little playing time, but Martell’s career has been anything but normal.
