Yahoo Finance Swimmer critical after shark attack on Great Barrier Reef
A swimmer is fighting for life after being attacked by a shark on the Great Barrier Reef.
A rescue helicopter responded to the attack at Britomart Reef off the coast of Lucinda, north of Townsville in Queensland, about 12.22pm (AEST) on Sunday.
Queensland Ambulance confirmed the patient was in a critical condition following the attack.
Britomart Reef has become popular for spearfishing and hosted the Queensland Spearfishing Titles in 2018.
The man, believed to be in his 50s, was treated at the Dungeness boat ramp at Lucinda before being airlifted to Townsville University Hospital, ABC News reported.
Just weeks ago a surfer was killed after suffering fatal leg injuries in a shark attack on the Gold Coast.
The victim was identified as 46-year-old Nick Slater from the Gold Coast suburb of Miami.
It was the second fatal shark attack in Queensland in little more than two months after 36-year-old Matthew Tratt died while spearfishing off Fraser Island in early July.
In June, Gold Coast surfer Rob Pedretti, 60, died after he was mauled by a three-metre shark at Salt Beach at South Kingscliff in northern NSW.
