Supermarket hack keeps Aussie mum's grocery shop under $50

The mother of one wants to help others reduce their grocery bills.

As the cost-of-living crisis continues, one mum has struck a chord with budget-conscious shoppers by revealing her trick for keeping her weekly grocery bill under $50, and it's not as hard as you might think.

The woman shared a copy of her receipt on social media, showing how she reduced her bill from $120.49 to only $29.44. "My groceries this week were $120.49 after saving $60 by shopping half-price specials and Woolies rewards members price items," she began.

She also detailed the range of discounts and special prices she was able to take advantage of. "I got a $12.05 discount by being a Woolies Everyday Extra customer (10% off total shop), $10 off using my Woolies rewards points and $70 off using a gift card I redeemed by doing online surveys," she explained.

How to cut your grocery bill with online surveys

While the shopper made some big savings, she admitted she had to invest some time in putting her plan into action. Each day, she spends two hours taking online surveys, which can fetch anywhere from 50c to $40, depending on the amount of time required to complete them.

While the payment offered for taking each survey varies, it all adds up, she said.

She then investigates which supermarket has the best sales that align with what she needs. She redeems a voucher for that store with the accumulated survey money. Online survey sites she uses include Octopus Group, AttaPoll, Pure Profile and Opinion World.

"Each week's surveys generate anywhere from $50-$100. I then redeem a gift card from either Woolies or Coles, depending on what half-price specials they have that week. I then go through all half-price items, specials etc," she shared.

"My groceries each week are never over $50 for myself and a 10-year-old! I hope I can help someone else or at least motivate someone to save every bit they can."

Fellow shoppers were grateful for the woman's advice, and some said they used a similar method to reduce their own grocery bills.

"I made $180 just a few weeks ago," responded one woman, who claimed she spent an "hour or two" doing surveys while sitting in bed watching TV.
