Strong week for Luminar Technologies (NASDAQ:LAZR) shareholders doesn't alleviate pain of one-year loss

Luminar Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:LAZR) shareholders will doubtless be very grateful to see the share price up 46% in the last week. But that isn't much consolation to those who have suffered through the declines of the last year. During that time the share price has sank like a stone, descending 63%. It's not that amazing to see a bounce after a drop like that. Of course, it could be that the fall was overdone.

Although the past week has been more reassuring for shareholders, they're still in the red over the last year, so let's see if the underlying business has been responsible for the decline.

Because Luminar Technologies made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally expect to see good revenue growth. That's because it's hard to be confident a company will be sustainable if revenue growth is negligible, and it never makes a profit.

In the last year Luminar Technologies saw its revenue grow by 90%. That's well above most other pre-profit companies. Meanwhile, the share price slid 63%. This could mean hype has come out of the stock because the bottom line is concerning investors. We'd definitely consider it a positive if the company is trending towards profitability. If you can see that happening, then perhaps consider adding this stock to your watchlist.

You can see how earnings and revenue have changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).

It's good to see that there was some significant insider buying in the last three months. That's a positive. That said, we think earnings and revenue growth trends are even more important factors to consider. A Different Perspective

Luminar Technologies shareholders are down 63% for the year, falling short of the market return. The market shed around 16%, no doubt weighing on the stock price. Shareholders have lost 13% per year over the last three years, so the share price drop has become steeper, over the last year; a potential symptom of as yet unsolved challenges. Although Baron Rothschild famously said to "buy when there's blood in the streets, even if the blood is your own", he also focusses on high quality stocks with solid prospects. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Luminar Technologies better, we need to consider many other factors. Take risks, for example - Luminar Technologies has 2 warning signs we think you should be aware of.

There are plenty of other companies that have insiders buying up shares. You probably do not want to miss this free list of growing companies that insiders are buying.
