Star Michelle Phan says YouTube is still relevant

Makeup and beauty star Michelle Phan said Friday that although she tries to be present on all social platforms, YouTube is still relevant for her.

"I still truly believe that YouTube is the global television set," she said in an interview with CNBC's " Squawk Alley ."

"If I want to produce really good video content, I know it's going to live on YouTube."

Phan got her start uploading makeup tutorials on the site eight years ago. Now she has 7.4 million subscribers and over 1 billion views on YouTube.

She is the co-founder of Ipsy, a start-up that ships a "glam bag" to a current 1 million subscribers each month. Now the company is taking the business further into the digital space with the launch of Open Studios, which will provide a platform for users to upload their own content on.

"This is really the future of beauty," said Marcelo Camberos, Ipsy co-founder and CEO. "So if we are close to them [users], that's just good for us."
