Stan is crafting an original drama series about climate change and biotechnology, featuring Downton Abbey star Joanne Froggatt

  • Aussie streaming service Stan is releasing a new Stan Original series, The Commons.

  • The series will star Downton Abbey actress Joanne Froggatt.

  • Production begins in and around Sydney next week.

Nine's streaming platform Stan has a new series on the horizon, starring former Downton Abbey actress Joanne Froggatt.

While you’ve been enjoying the trove of Disney (and Marvel) films available on Stan, the online streaming service has been cooking up more original content, with a new series called ‘The Commons’ in the works.

The drama will star UK actress Joanne Froggatt, known for her roles as Anna Bates in the hugely popular period drama Downton Abbey, and Laura Nielson in the British psychological drama Liar. Froggatt even won a Golden Globe for her part in Downton Abbey, taking out the best supporting actress in a series category in 2015.

Starring alongside Froggatt will be Aussie actor Damon Herriman who was in another Stan Original series, Perpetual Grace, and will play a role in Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming flick, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

We're light on details at the moment, but we do know The Commons will be a mystery drama set in the near future that revolves around biotechnology and the very hot topic of climate change. It it set to go for eight hours – perfect for binge watching if you fancy.

Sally Caplan, Screen Australia’s head of content, said the show will put “a spotlight on the challenges of climate change, ethical boundaries and the place of motherhood in saving the planet.”

The show was created by Shelley Birse, author of the book turned tv series, Blue Water High and creator of the Aussie drama, The Code. It will be produced by Playmaker – the team behind House Husbands, Love Child and Bloom – and its sales will be handled by Sony Pictures Television.

Stan teamed up with Screen Australia and New South Wales’ arts funding body, Create NSW for the series.

The company’s Chief Content Officer Nick Forward said ‘The Commons’ “continues to demonstrate our ambition as the home of original Australian productions”.

The Commons is set to deliver more than 290 cast, crew and post production jobs, with production to begin in and around Sydney next week.

It is expected to hit your screen in 2020. Watch this space.
