Yahoo Finance Sources: Boise St. hiring Oregon defensive coordinator Andy Avalos as next football coach
Oregon defensive coordinator Andy Avalos is finalizing a deal to become the next coach at Boise State, according to sources.
Avalos, 39, is both a former player and coach at Boise State, including a three-year stint as the defensive coordinator before going to Oregon following the 2018 season.
Avalos replaces Bryan Harsin, who was the surprise hire at Auburn after going 69-19 in seven seasons at Boise State.
Avalos has deep ties to the school. He played for Dan Hawkins there in the early 2000s and then served for three seasons as a graduate assistant for Hawkins at Colorado. Avalos’ first defense at Oregon finished No. 9 nationally in scoring (16.5).
Avalos is the first hire of Jeramiah Dickey, the Boise athletic director who has been on the job for less than a week. Dickey and school president Marlene Tromp chose Avalos over a field that included Montana State coach Jeff Choate, USC offensive coordinator Graham Harrell and Florida offensive coordinator Brian Johnson.
Avalos inherits a job with some of the biggest expectations in the Group of Five. Prior to the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, Boise State had won at least nine games in six consecutive seasons.
Both Dickey and Avalos arrive at an interesting crossroads for both the university and the program. The school appears interested in attempting to move leagues, as emails surfaced in media reports revealed that Boise State had been in touch with the American Athletic Conference about potential membership.
