'So close': Sydney woman one number off $183 million lotto win

An Aussie has come devastatingly close to winning a $183 million lotto jackpot after she narrowly missed out by one number.

The NSW woman bought a ticket in the USA Power Lotto, a draw Australians can enter through agencies licensed to sell tickets in Australia.

The woman, who purchased her ticket through The Lottery Office, collected $48,732 as a division 3 winner while the division one prize has jackpotted to a whopping $215 million.

Despite missing out by just one number, the 60-year-old woman was still grateful for the tens of thousands of dollars she pocketed.

"I was scammed by a car hire company a few weeks back so I can't wait to be able to treat myself again," she told The Lottery Office.

"I've booked a cruise from South America to Antarctica in June next year for me and my friends, I'm going to put the winnings towards upgrading my cabin and spoiling everyone."

The Lottery Office chief executive Jaclyn Wood said in a statement the woman was "excruciatingly" close to becoming a multi-millionaire.

"We were so close to breaking the record for providing the largest prize ever won in Australia," she said.

The CEO added however there could be another chance for Aussies to make history in the USA Mega Lotto draw on Wednesday (Australian time).

"I am hoping that another Aussie strikes it lucky this Wednesday with our USA Mega Lotto at A$506 million," she said.

Australians hoping for a chance to win the life-changing prize can purchase a ticket from The Lottery Office, who will then buy a matching ticket in the overseas draw.

"If the customer wins, we pay them the exact amount of the winnings we collect from the overseas lottery ticket," Ms Wood said.

Last year in June, one player from Sydney was one number away from winning more than $500 million in the USA Mega Lotto draw.

In January, there was an eye-watering $1.4 billion up for grabs in two US lotto draws.
