Snap lens transforms New York Public Library into spectacular concert venue

One of New York City’s most famous institutions is getting a high-tech makeover, thanks to Verizon and Snap Inc.’s first-ever 5G Landmarker Lens.

As of Nov. 22, Verizon 5G Ultra Wideband customers with 5G smartphones will be treated to a spectacular show outside Manhattan’s New York Public Library, featuring a performance by the Grammy-nominated Black Pumas.

To enjoy the augmented reality experience, Verizon 5G customers need only to stand outside the historic landmark, open the Snapchat app and point their smartphone cameras at the library using the Verizon 5G Landmarker Lens.

Then, the building will transform into a next-generation stage, where users can watch Black Pumas frontman Eric Burton’s 3D Bitmoji dance to the hit song “Colors” in front of an explosion of flora and fauna from the sidewalks of 5th Avenue.

The innovative performance was recorded by Verizon Media’s RYOT in the first and only 5G production studio in the country.

“There’s no better way to demonstrate the sheer power of Verizon 5G Ultra Wideband than by creating unique experiences that align with consumers’ interests and take them to places they never imagined possible,” said Frank Boulben, Verizon Senior Vice President of Consumer Marketing and Products, in a press release. “The 5G Landmarker Lens is an example of how 5G can redefine music experiences through augmented reality.”

Non-Verizon customers need not fret — a shorter, non-5G enabled version of the Landmarker Lens is available for everyone to experience through Snapchat.
