Small detail on 20c coin could be worth $4,000

Have you been building up a collection of 20c coins you never use? It’s time to check them.

If you have a big coin collection just picking up dust somewhere in your home, you might want to empty it out to look through your 20 cent pieces.

That’s because there is a small detail on some 20 cent coins that could actually make them worth up to $4,000.

Popular Aussie TikToker The History of Money said the special 20 cent coins - which have a “wavy” detail - were minted in 1966, so be sure to check the date first.

“Find a coin from 1966 and turn it over to the tail side. Look at the bottom of the number ‘2’, at the top of the base. If it’s wavy you’re gonna be in the money,” he said in his video.

‘Holy grail’ of Aussie coins

For Aussie coin collectors, the “holy grail” is an original Australian penny, of which around six have sold for roughly $1 million each, according to The History of Money.

However, even regular 1930s Australian pennies can sell for around $50,000 at auction.

Only 3,000 of the regular 1930 pennies were made and were only released directly through the Royal Australian Mint’s visitor program and not put into circulation.

While the classic 1930 Australian penny is very rare, there are other Aussie coins you might be more likely to have in your collection.

The 2012 remembrance $2 coin, which has a red poppy on one side, was one of the lowest-minted coins in Australian history, with just 503,000 entering circulation. If you have one of those in your spare change, it could fetch you a massive $370.

Likewise, if you have one of the 2013 purple coronation $2 coins, you could score around $180 for it.

The 2013 coin had a mintage of around 995,000, making it also quite a rare find.
