The cost-of-living crisis is forcing Aussies to get savvy about their grocery shopping, with many now turning to old school catalogues to find deals.

Nearly two-thirds of Aussies are planning their grocery shop in advance by browsing digital and paper catalogues to find the best promotions and deals, according to new research by ShopFully and Nielsen.

One in two Aussies use catalogues as their top source of information when planning their in-store visits, the survey of 1,198 people found, while 66 per cent browse digital catalogues at least once a week.

Brendan Straw, ShopFully’s country manager of Australia, said Aussie shoppers were becoming increasingly savvy about where they spent their money.

“As shoppers continue to feel the cost-of-living pinch, the ‘budget-conscious shopper’ has become the everyday Australian,” Straw said.

“Consumers who approach spending with a tactical plan having done their research to compare prices can significantly reduce their weekly grocery shop, saving upwards of $50-$100 a week.”

About 71 per cent of Aussies said they now opted for the cheapest option while grocery shopping, including homebrand or on-sale items, while 67 per cent have stopped buying products altogether because of price hikes.

‘Inflation diets’

It’s not the only savvy way Aussies are saving money on groceries. On the popular AusFinance subreddit, one user shared they had created an ‘inflation diet’ to save a few extra dollars, which included meat, nuts, oils and coffee.

“Most of this is from Aldi and Coles, I rarely shop at Woolies as the prices make my eyes water. I rarely eat packaged snack foods now, not by choice but by telling myself things like ‘you could buy meat for that price!’” the user said.

Other people said they saved money by freezing herbs with vinegar to make them last longer, buying meat from the local butcher, using dried legumes to pad out their meals, and stocking up meat and pantry items at Costco.
