Shareholders in Aroa Biosurgery (ASX:ARX) are in the red if they invested a year ago

Over the last month the Aroa Biosurgery Limited (ASX:ARX) has been much stronger than before, rebounding by 32%. But that is minimal compensation for the share price under-performance over the last year. In fact, the price has declined 21% in a year, falling short of the returns you could get by investing in an index fund.

So let's have a look and see if the longer term performance of the company has been in line with the underlying business' progress.

Given that Aroa Biosurgery didn't make a profit in the last twelve months, we'll focus on revenue growth to form a quick view of its business development. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually expect strong revenue growth. That's because fast revenue growth can be easily extrapolated to forecast profits, often of considerable size.

In the last twelve months, Aroa Biosurgery increased its revenue by 78%. That's a strong result which is better than most other loss making companies. Given the revenue growth, the share price drop of 21% seems quite harsh. Our sympathies to shareholders who are now underwater. On the bright side, if this company is moving profits in the right direction, top-line growth like that could be an opportunity. Our brains have evolved to think in linear fashion, so there's value in learning to recognize exponential growth. We are, in some ways, simply the wisest of the monkeys.

A Different Perspective

We doubt Aroa Biosurgery shareholders are happy with the loss of 21% over twelve months. That falls short of the market, which lost 2.7%. There's no doubt that's a disappointment, but the stock may well have fared better in a stronger market. It's great to see a nice little 2.4% rebound in the last three months. This could just be a bounce because the selling was too aggressive, but fingers crossed it's the start of a new trend.
