Yahoo Finance Savannah Marshall declares Claressa Shields ‘would not last two minutes’ in huge showdown after Muzeya TKO
Savannah Marshall successfully defended her world middleweight title with a second-round stoppage of Lolita Muzeya in Newcastle.
The TKO victory keeps the Brit en route for a huge face-off with American champ Claressa Shields next year, with the pair’s war of words continuing after Marshall’s win.
Shields watched on via video link as the Hartlepool fighter, 30, claimed her 11th pro win against Muzeya.
A fiery opening from the Zambian threatened to shock the home crowd but Marshall fought back to pin her opponent against the ropes and unload shortly before the end of the second round, forcing a stoppage.
It was announced post-fight that both Marshall and Shields will fight on the same card in Birmingham in December, both defending world title belts and unbeaten records in their 12th contests.
Shields teased her rival before the fight over the ‘Curse’ that had seen her fall just before their showdowns in two World Championship and two Olympic Games.
The two-weight lineal champ then told Marshall: “See you next year girlie, we'll show you what a real champion fights like.”
But Saturday night’s victor played up to the home crowd, and responded: “What a load of crap. Claressa couldn't last two minutes, never mind two rounds.”
She added: “I'm absolutely overwhelmed. I'm still a women in a man's sport and to have this amount of support, I'm on cloud nine.”
