An advertisement for an Australian union currently has social media rolling on the floor laughing.

The Australian Manufacturing Worker's Union (AMWU) on Tuesday released a poster that depicts three broken celebrity relationships – Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, and Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake.

All three couples are each pictured with their own broken heart graphic, with the poster captioned "The only union I believe in anymore is my trade union".

It's unknown how effective the poster has been in recruiting new members to the AMWU. But it has attracted immediate reaction from amused social media users.

"Oh, my God," was the reaction from one Facebook user, while another said, "How savage and awesome is this content!"

"Who ever runs this account needs a promotion," said Richard Woods.

One union follower was unfortunately shocked to hear the latest news.

"When did Miley and Liam split??? Why do I know nothing????" said Nadia Cicchinè.

The AMWU was sympathetic, replying: "Omg...We are so sorry you had to find out this way."

When one social media user said she didn't realise the AMWU was so invested in celebrity couples, the union responded that it was recently left heartbroken by the Cyrus-Hemsworth news.

"What can we say? We love our local boy Liam Hemsworth and just wanted to see him happy."
