Yahoo Finance Ron Rivera is hoping to bring Trent Williams back into the fold in D.C.: 'He's still our guy'
When Ron Rivera coaches his first game in Washington D.C., he’s hoping Trent Williams will be on the field with him. Rivera will meet with Williams to discuss the offensive lineman’s future. Rivera made it clear he wants to have Williams around, telling NBCS Washington, “He’s still our guy.”
The 31-year-old Williams sat out the entire 2019 season due to a dispute with the organization. Last October, Williams revealed he had a cancerous growth removed from his head. The issue developed years prior, but the Washington Redskins medical staff downplayed the severity of the growth, according to Williams.
As a result of that mistrust, Williams held out as long as possible before re-joining the team. Williams then failed his physical after refusing to put on a helmet. The team placed Williams on the non-football injury list. He didn’t play a single snap in 2019.
There’s no doubt getting Williams back would be a major upgrade for Washington. Prior to sitting out in 2019, Williams had made seven-straight Pro Bowls. He’s considered one of the best tackles in the game.
It could be difficult to convince Williams to suit up in D.C. next season. There have been reports suggesting Williams has no desire to play for the franchise again.
Rivera is hoping that’s no longer the case. Washington fired both Bruce Allen and the team’s head athletic trainer after the season, opening the door for Williams to return. Williams was reportedly the most upset with Allen and the team’s medical staff.
Still, given what Williams went through, convincing him to return won’t be an easy task. No matter how many people the team fired, the organization still misdiagnosed Williams’ cancer.
That might be something Williams isn’t willing to forgive.
