Balancing motherhood and work is never easy, but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible.

Model and influencer Rocky Barnes had her son Jones 14 months ago. Barnes always knew she wanted to be a mom, but being self-employed made it seem all the more daunting. Working in the modeling industry pretty much meant there would never be a “right time” to start a family but ultimately she found the balance.

“I work for myself and wasn’t really planning on having a maternity leave just because when you work for yourself, you’re your own boss and if you’re not doing it, it doesn’t really happen,” Barnes said.

But when things so slowed down due to the pandemic, she was able to slow down with them and work from home.

“I’m definitely trying to find the balance between being a mom and going back to work,” she said. “I think one of the things that I struggle with the most — the mom guilt is definitely real.”

If Barnes leaves for a day, like a lot of parents, she’s just anxious to get home to her baby.

Most days she spends her work time in Zoom meetings. And with only five minutes to get ready (from the waist up), these are the products she has come to rely on for a quick, professional look.

“What I found works for me and what’s key is throwing on some lipstick. My favorite one is the Smashbox Liquid Lip,” she said.

The liquid lipstick has a matte finish, doesn’t smudge and lasts all day.

“I love is this eye serum from Mutha,” she explained. “You’re starting to get a little more sleep but you also realize that you need eye cream.”

Another go-to of the mother was her gold hoop earrings by Bychari.

“The gold hoops add a little bit of bling to every outfit,” Barnes said. “They’re super lightweight so not uncomfortable and won’t irritate your ears. It’s the little touches that really take you to that girl boss moment.”

Barnes also traded in her old pumps for a chic mule shoe.

“As a new mom, you’re always running around in between Zoom calls chasing Jones,” she said. “Having a comfy yet professional slide is so key and you will wear it all the time.”

Last but not least, there’s nothing like throwing on a blazer to complete your work uniform.

“Putting a blazer on it really changes your whole attitude,” Barnes said. “Especially now, blazers are so popular, [with] the oversized fit. Just putting one on with a red lip kind of puts you out of mom zone for a minute and into work zone.”
