On this episode of In The Know: Upcycled, style icon and DIY fashion genius, Wandy the Maker (@wandythemaker), gives a tutorial on how to transform fabric scraps into a one-of-a-kind reversible, patchwork bucket hat!
What you’ll need:
Fabric Scraps
Step 1: Cut your scrap fabric
Start by cutting your scrap fabric. Wandy cuts his pieces into a variety of sizes for a more “irregular look.”
Step 2: Arrange your fabric pieces
Next, arrange your pieces of cut scraps onto a 24-inch by 24-inch sheet. Wandy alternates pieces of camo and solid print fabric “to give it that pathwork vibe.”
Step 3: Sew your pieces together
Once your pieces are arranged how you want them, it’s time to sew them together! Sew your pieces right sides together with your sewing machine, using a straight stitch with a quarter-inch seam allowance. Don’t forget to back stitch at the beginning and end of the seam to hold everything in place. Repeat this process for the rest of your fabric pieces.
Step 4: Cut out your pattern
Once your sheet of patchwork fabric is made, you can lay out your cut pattern paper and cut out the pieces for your hat.
Step 5: Sew your hat pieces together
After you’ve cut out your pattern pieces, it’s time to sew them together. For the sides of the hat, Wandy lays them out right sides together, and pins them. Then, he sews them to create the body piece of the hat. Next, Wandy sews the top of the hat to the body. Since this part is curved, make sure to take your time sewing! It helps to have a sturdy surface, like a sewing table. Last, Wandy sews the brim pieces together, and then sews the completed brim onto the rest of the hat.
Step 6: Create your lining
To make your hat reversible, repeat steps 1-5 using a lining fabric. This will go on the inside of your patterned hat.
Step 7: Combine your hat with your lining
Turn your lining hat inside out and place it on top of the patterned hat. Then, line up the edges of the brims and pin them together. Sew a straight stitch all the way around the brim, leaving a 2-inch opening so you can turn it right side out again. If the seams along the brim tuck in at this part, just pinch them out with your finger and iron them to get the full width of the brim.
Step 8: Sew up the opening
Finish up by sewing up the opening you left before turning the hat right side out. The finished product is a totally unique, reversible and sustainable bucket hat made from scrap fabric!
