Retailers enjoy Boxing Day bonanza

Rundle Mall retailers are counting the success of their first Boxing Day sales since the South Australian Government relaxed trading laws.

Stores were able to trade in Adelaide's city centre from 11:00am-5:00pm.

It is estimated as many as 120,000 people visited the stores in the Mall.

Retailers said more than $10 million went through their tills.

Chair of the Rundle Mall Management Authority Theo Maras said it was an outstanding day.

"In the history of the Mall that's the first time we've ever been able to get the 120,000 people, especially given that it was only a six-hour trading period, but in terms of dollars and cents it's been a very, very resounding comeback and the people have been very happy to spend," he said.

Nigel McBride from Business SA said the success of Boxing Day trading warranted an earlier opening next time.

"People are up for sales, they're ready to go, why not open at 9?" he said.
