Report: Star LB Monty Rice one of three Georgia players who will opt out of bowl game

Georgia will reportedly be without its second-leading tackler for its bowl game.

Rivals site UGASports.com is reporting that linebacker Monty Rice is one of three Georgia players who will not play in the postseason. Georgia is likely going to go to a New Year’s Six bowl game. The Bulldogs are currently ranked No. 8 in the College Football Playoff rankings and will find out on Sunday where they’ll play. Yahoo Sports’ current bowl projections have Georgia in the Peach Bowl.

Rice has 49 tackles and four tackles for loss in nine games this season. He’s been one of the best linebackers in college football and was named one of the five finalists for the Butkus Award. That trophy is given to the best linebacker in college football.

The other four finalists are Missouri’s Nick Bolton, Tulsa’s Zaven Collins, Utah’s Devin Lloyd and Notre Dame’s Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah.

Rice has recorded over 200 tackles in his Georgia career. He had 89 stops in 2019 as the Bulldogs went to the Sugar Bowl.

Tre McKitty and D.J. Daniel also opting out

UGA Sports said the other two players set to opt out are tight end Tre McKitty and cornerback D.J. Daniel. McKitty has six catches for 108 yards and a TD in 2020 and Daniel has nine tackles. McKitty came to Georgia as a transfer from Florida State.

Georgia’s regular season is over as the Bulldogs won’t play on Saturday. UGA was set to play Vanderbilt but the Commodores canceled the game because of a lack of players. The Bulldogs are currently 7-2 and could move ahead of rival Florida in the CFP rankings if the Gators lose to Alabama on Saturday in the SEC championship game.
