Report: Knicks and Tom Thibodeau finalizing five-year deal to be team's next head coach

The New York Knicks have reportedly found their next coach. Former Chicago Bulls and Minnesota Timberwolves coach Tom Thibodeau is finalizing a five-year deal with the team, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

Thibodeau, 62, comes to the team after a year away from the game. Thibodeau was fired by the Timberwolves in 2019, and did not coach this season. In eight seasons as a head coach, Thibodeau has led his team to the postseason six times, though has not made it to the NBA Finals.

The Knicks considered a number of candidates to be the team’s next head coach — including Mike Brown and Jason Kidd — but Thibodeau was considered the favorite.

With the move, Thibodeau returns to the Knicks, where he was an assistant coach for seven seasons in the ‘90s.

He’ll be tasked with turning around the franchise, which went just 21-45 this season, and has not made the playoffs since the 2012-13 season.
