Report: Haircuts landed Chiefs players on NFL's COVID list

On Monday, news broke that two Kansas City Chiefs players landed on the NFL’s reserve/COVID-19 list, raising concerns about the pandemic’s potential impact on Sunday’s Super Bowl.

Neither wide receiver Demarcus Robinson nor backup center Daniel Kilgore tested positive, but both were classified as having close contact exposures.

On Tuesday, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero shed light on what happened. Both players received haircuts from a barber who tested positive for COVID-19 on Sunday. According to the report, all parties were masked during their interactions, and Robinson and Kilgore still have not returned a positive test.

More players were lined up to see infected barber

According to the report, the barber was in the process of cutting Kilgore’s hair when the Chiefs received the result of his positive test. He had returned five consecutive negative tests prior to the rapid test that produced the positive result. The barber was immediately removed from the scene, but told officials he had cut Robinson’s hair the day prior, according to the report.

Kilgore, Robinson can play if they remain negative

Robinson and Kilgore are expected to be eligible to play Sunday if they continue to return negative tests. They won’t participate in practice or other in-person team activities in the meantime because of the NFL’s required five-day isolation period following a high-risk exposure.

Robinson addressed the news on Instagram Monday, vowing to practice Friday when he’s eligible in preparation for Sunday’s game.

“All my tests have been negative,” Robinson said. “I’ll see y’all at the Super Bowl.”

Robinson was Kansas City’s fourth-leading receiver this season, tallying 45 catches for 466 yards and three touchdowns. He played in all 16 games, including nine starts.

Kilgore backs up starting center Austin Reiter. He played in seven games this season, making four starts.

There are no reports of other Chiefs players being considered as high-risk close contacts.
