Yahoo Finance Report: Giants releasing kicker Aldrick Rosas following hit-and-run charges
Aldrick Rosas, the Pro Bowl kicker for the New York Giants, will be released by the team after being formally charged last week for a highway hit-and-run, ESPN reported on Sunday.
Giants training camp is only days away. Rosas could also face discipline from the league office, which appears to be reviewing the matter.
Rosas charged with 3 misdemeanors
Rosas, 25, was charged with three misdemeanors last week after an arrest in June for a highway hit-and-run. He faces charges of reckless driving, hit-and-run and property damage, and driving with a suspended license due to a previous DUI in Butte County, California.
The district attorney said Rosas was arrested in 2016, before his three seasons with the Giants began in 2017, for driving under the influence. Rosas attended Southern Oregon and is from Chico, California.
The Giants told the New York Daily News at the time of the charges they were “aware of the situation and have been in contact with Aldrick.” He will be arraigned on Sept. 4.
Rosas driving near 100 mph in hit-and-run
The hit-and-run took place on June 15 around 8:30 a.m. Witnesses said they saw Rosas driving his Chevrolet SUV somewhere between 90 mph and 100 mph on a highway in his hometown of Chico.
He ran a red light and T-boned a pickup truck, per the incident report. He allegedly left the scene on foot since he wasn’t able to drive his vehicle away. Four hours later he was found wandering down a road less than a mile from the accident, per the report. His hands, legs and bare feet were covered in blood, police said.
Rough 2019 for Rosas after breakout year
Rosas was a Pro Bowl selection in 2018, his second season, when he made 32 of his 33 field goal attempts.
But in 2019, he made only 12 of 17 (70.6 percent). Still, he re-signed on a $3.3 million deal in the offseason. Veterans are to report to training camp on Tuesday. There is no other place kicker on the Giants depth chart at the moment.
