Former San Diego Chargers and New England Patriots wide receiver Reche Caldwell was shot and killed Saturday in Tampa, according to TMZ.

The report indicates that Caldwell, 41, was “ambushed” by “a couple of people” outside of his house, apparently with the intent of robbing him, according to his mother. It indicates that Caldwell was shot in the leg and chest and died in an ambulance on the way to the hospital.

The NFL expressed its condolences midday Sunday:

The Patriots confirmed Caldwell’s death, saying they were “deeply saddened.” The Chargers and Washington Redskins also offered condolences.

A former second-round pick out of Florida in 2002, Caldwell played six seasons with the Chargers, Patriots and Washington Redskins. He caught 152 passes for 1,851 yards (12.2 average) and 11 TDs in 71 career games.

Former players have begun sending their condolences on social media.

More details will be added as they come in.
