Report: Eagles expected to trade Carson Wentz soon, Bears and Colts have shown interest

The Philadelphia Eagles could part ways with former No. 2 overall draft pick Carson Wentz soon.

The team has been engaged in trade talks involving Wentz for at least a week, and could pull the trigger on a deal in the next couple days, according to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen and Adam Schefter.

Wentz, 28, is available after losing his starting job to Jalen Hurts this past season. In 12 starts, Wentz completed 57.4 percent of his passes for 16 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. Those numbers represent a steep decline for Wentz, who threw for 27 touchdowns against seven interceptions in 2019.

Wentz signed a four-year, $128 million extension with the Eagles in 2019, and still has roughly $100 million remaining on that deal, which will expire following the 2024 season. The cost of the deal could impact Wentz’s value, as teams may be hesitant to give up too much for a player trending downward.

The Eagles don’t see it that way. Philadelphia is looking for a “Matthew Stafford package” in exchange for Wentz, according to Mortensen and Schefter. Stafford was traded to the Los Angeles Rams in January in exchange for two first-round draft picks, a third-round pick and starter Jared Goff.

Bears, Colts interested in Carson Wentz

Despite that asking price and Wentz’s contract, the Chicago Bears and Indianapolis Colts have expressed interest in Wentz, according to Mortensen and Schefter. Other teams have checked in on Wentz as well.

The Bears could be looking for a new starter with Mitchell Trubisky’s future uncertain. The team has every incentive to bring in some new blood, as general manager Ryan Pace and head coach Matt Nagy could again be on the hot seat if the Bears struggle in 2021. Chicago could also select a new quarterback in the draft with the No. 20 overall pick. If the Bears don’t add another QB, Nick Foles will be the team’s presumed 2021 starter.

The Colts are in a similar situation after Philip Rivers retired in January. Jacoby Brissett, who started 15 games in 2019 for Indianapolis, is a free agent this offseason. The Colts hold the No. 21 overall pick in the 2021 draft and could select a quarterback if the team fails to land Wentz in a deal.
