A real estate agent tried to evict 3 tenants from an apartment. A day later he was found dead in a secret room on their property.

  • The body of real estate agent David Stokoe, 40, was discovered at an apartment in Salt Lake City, Utah, on Friday.

  • Police say Stokoe had visited the apartment to evict the tenants who lived there on Thursday, but was never seen leaving.

  • Manuel Velasquez, 31, Jessica Miller, 38, and Diana Hernandez, 30, were arrested on Saturday in connection with Stokoe's death.

A Utah real estate broker was shot and killed while attempting to evict tenants from a Salt Lake City apartment, police say.

Three people were arrested on Saturday after the body of David Stokoe, 40, was found in a secret room of the apartment he'd been renting out to the suspects, according to WKRN.

Manuel Velasquez, 31, was arrested on suspicion of murder on Saturday, and his two alleged accomplices, Jessica Miller, 38, and Diana Hernandez, 30, were arrested on suspicion of obstruction of justice.

Salt Lake City Police Sgt. Greg Wilking told WKRN that Stokoe, who owned the apartment, had paid a visit to the apartment on Thursday to evict the three tenants, but he was never seen leaving.

His family reported him missing on Friday, and police discovered evidence at the apartment that someone had been seriously injured, police said in a press conference.

As they were investigating the scene, police found a secret door leading to a crawl space and discovered Stokoe's body, they continued.

Police said they also believe Velazquez shot Stokoe during a fight, and Miller and Hernandez helped clean up the crime scene.

It remains unclear if the suspects have legal representation.

Stokoe leaves behind four children. His family issued a statement to Fox News 13 saying their hearts were "broken over the loss of David."

"This situation is tragic beyond words, but we are remembering Dave the way he deserves to be remembered, as a hero and champion," they said in a statement.

"We know we will see him again someday, and that families are forever," the statement said. "We are choosing to focus on the love we feel from everyone and the love we feel for Dave, rather than resentment surrounding the circumstances of his death. He's cheering for us, watching over us, and wants us to love life and love each other."

A GoFundMe has been organised to help Stokoe's wife, Nikki, and their four children.
