‘But the rats don’t run this city, we do’ TikTok sound explained

New York City’s rat problem has invaded TikTok after sparking a new meme.

Pests have always been a problem in the Big Apple but the pandemic seemed to usher in a new era of rat prosperity. In October, the New York Sanitation Department reported a 71% increase in rat complaints this year compared to the same time in 2020.

During an Oct. 17 news conference to address the issue, alongside Mayor Eric Adams, New York City sanitation commissioner Jessica Tisch sent a tough message to rats.

“The rats are going to absolutely hate this announcement. But the rats don’t run this city, we do,” Tisch said.

Tisch’s “tough on rats” speech has become a viral sound on TikTok, currently used in over 22,000 videos. Whenever someone is feeling particularly bossed up and ready to deliver bad news, the snippet just feels right.

Dad letting the whole house know that he’s not putting the heating on for the whole of winter,” @puwtok said in a video.

“When I have to go into lecturing mom mode and not the cool older sister mode on my younger siblings,” @yar4g stated using the sound.

“When we give the party a dress-up theme knowing all the boys are gonna hate it,” @lordmaz joked in a TikTok.

“When you tell your fiancé you are getting a pink fridge for the kitchen,” @misshallahan said, revealing her retro pink fridge.
