If you’ve got an interesting-looking $2 coin with a red centre lying around, hang onto it – or sell it for $200.

Joey Kandiah, a Perth-based teacher behind popular TikTok account The History of Money, has revealed the existence of the “rarest circulating” $2 coin that could be worth 100 times its value.

Australia issued two types of special $2 coins to commemorate Remembrance Day in 2012, Kandiah explained in his recent TikTok video.

5 million ‘Gold Poppy’ coins were issued and are in circulation, featuring the iconic flower in the centre.

However, a different set of ‘Gold Poppy’ coins exist that feature red poppies in the centre.

But a “flawed coloured minting process” means that it’s easy for the red to rub off, Kandiah said.

“It is extremely hard to find them now in your change, let alone in good condition,” the video captions state.

But it doesn’t even need to be in good condition to sell for several times its actual dollar value of two dollars.

Without any paint at all, these $2 coins can get you $50.

Another coin with some red paint remaining can fetch you $100.

And if the coin hasn’t been in circulation at all and is in perfect condition, selling the coin can fetch you $200 or more, “depending on the grade,” according to Kandiah.

Kandiah’s videos have made headlines recently for shedding light on rare versions of currency such as $5, $50 and $20 banknotes that can go for hundreds or even thousands of dollars.
