Qantas, Virgin back in the air from today
Qantas and Virgin will reintroduce dozens of domestic flights starting from today which will see stranded Australians to return home and allow frontline Covid-19 workers to travel.
The flights will cover all capital cities of every state and capital, as well as Albury, Alice Springs, Coffs Harbour, Dubbo, Kalgoorlie, Mildura, Port Lincoln, Rockhampton, Tamworth, Townsville and Wagga Wagga.
The flights have been able to take off thanks to $165 million in federal funding to help keep the embattled airlines in the air, and ensures essential workers like medical and defence personnel can travel and crucial freight such as medicine and personal protective equipment can move.
“As Australians are asked to stay home unless absolutely necessary, we are ensuring secure and affordable access for passengers who need to travel,” said Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack on Thursday night.
The flights will also let Australians overseas or in a different state to their home state to return home, he added.
"This investment will also help Australians returning from overseas, who find themselves in a different city after 14 days of mandatory quarantine, complete their journey home safely."
The number of Qantas and Jetstar flights will increase from 105 to 164 per week, the airlines said in a statement.
For most Australians, normal quarantine rules apply, which is that non-essential travel is banned.
