Qantas loses crown as world’s safest airline
Air New Zealand has narrowly reclaimed its title as the safest airline for 2024.
Qantas has been knocked off the top spot as the world’s safest airline, narrowly losing its crown to Air New Zealand for 2024.
Virgin Australia joined Qantas in the top three of AirlineRatings.com’s annual list of the world’s safest airlines for 2024 based on the 385 different airlines it monitored. Qantas fell to second place in the rankings, while Virgin moved up from 10th place to third.
AirlineRatings.com editor-in-chief Geoffrey Thomas said it was an extremely close tussle between Air New Zealand and Qantas, with just 1.5 points separating the two. Fleet age just tipped Qantas off the winning spot.

“Our top 25 safest airlines are all standouts in the industry and are at the forefront of safety, innovation, and launching of new aircraft,” Thomas said.
“In fact, the safety margins between these top 25 airlines are very small.”
To determine the rankings, AirlineRatings.com analysed crashes over five years, serious incidents over two years, audits from aviation governing and industry bodies, government audits, fleet age and aircrew training.
