Public safety at risk from substandard builders

The Victorian ombudsman has found the Building Commission has put public safety at risk by allowing substandard builders to be licensed.

In a report tabled in State Parliament, the ombudsman found serious flaws in how the commission assessed building practitioners.

It also found the commission spent at least $1.5 million on entertainment and hospitality.

The ombudsman says the establishment last month of a new body to oversee the building industry should address the concerns raised in the report.
