Yahoo Finance Prince Philip death: Prince Charles and Camilla make emotional visit to floral tributes at Marlborough House
The Palace had requested no floral tributes – yet still the flowers kept coming.
This morning Prince of Wales and his wife the Duchess of Cornwall went to view the hundreds/thousands of bunches and bouquets laid at Royal residences in honour of the Duke of Edinburgh since his death last Friday at the age of 99.
Officially the public are being asked not to lay flowers to prevent any possible breach of Covid guidelines. Instead they were advised to make a donation to a charity close to their heart.
But the message has not stopped many from paying their respects the traditional way by laying down flowers, many with touching tributes attached.
To avoid them becoming a spectacle that might attract a crowd, the flowers have been gathered up and brought to Marlborough House, the headquarters of the Commonwealth and the seat of its Secretariat just off the Mall.
It is a fitting resting place for the flowers given Prince Philip’s long association with the club of 54 member states, almost all of which are former territories of the British Empire.
Floral tributes included a model of a Land Rover similar to the one that will bear his coffin on Saturday, with the “The Duke R.I.P” on the roof.
Next to it was a card, from “Marian & Marum”, that read: “Your memory will never face. Rest in Peace.”
Another read: “Words cannot even begin to express our sorrow, you are in our prayers.”
Another was to Queen Elizabeth. “Sending our love and condolences on the loss of your beloved Prince Philip yours always love Layla, Lis and Neil xxxx”
The Duke of Edinburgh undertook 229 solo visits to Commonwealth countries between 1949 and 2016, with many more trips made alongside the Queen.
He also made two round-the-world voyages aboard HMY Britannia visiting some of the remotest parts of the Commonwealth as Her Majesty’s representative.
Grade 1-listed Marlborough House, off the Mall, is the former London home of the monarch’s grandmother, Queen Mary. It later became the Headquarters of the Commonwealth and the seat of the Commonwealth Secretariat.
It was built for Sarah Churchill, Duchess of Marlborough, the favourite and confidante of Queen Anne.
For over a century it served as the London residence of the Dukes of Marlborough and became a royal residence through the 19th century and first half of the 20th.
It was leased by The Queen to the Commonwealth Secretariat in 1965.
The Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral will take place at St George’s Chapel, Windsor, on Saturday.
At Marlborough House, another tribute read: “HRH A True Gentleman. Thank you for your devoted service to our country. We shall miss you.”
Another to the Queen read: “We are so sorry for your profound loss Your Majesty’s “strength and stay” will endure in our hearts always.“Wishing Your Majesty peace in the days ahead and sending our deepest condolences. Yours sincerely, The Kohler Family, Annapolis, Maryland USA”.
