Yahoo Finance Premier League clubs to hold emergency meeting to discuss options with season on hold due to coronavirus
Premier League clubs will hold an emergency meeting Thursday to discuss the next steps now that the season is on hold, according to NBC Sports. The Premier League suspended play until April 4 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The teams are expected to discuss a number of options, including considering the 2019-20 season null and void, meaning it would not count at all.
While that seems extreme, many are concerned over whether the league will be able to continue games April 4. That feels like an aggressive date, especially considering Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta and Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi tested positive for coronavirus. The entire Chelsea team, including USMNT star Christian Pulisic, and a number of players on Arsenal have gone into self-quarantine as a result.
Premier League to vote on its future
Once options are presented, the Premier League will vote to determine what it will do next. In order for a vote to pass, 14 of the 20 Premier League teams will have to approve of the plan.
UEFA will also meet to discuss options amid coronavirus pandemic
UEFA is also trying to figure out its future. European soccer’s governing body will hold a teleconference Tuesday to discuss its options moving forward. UEFA has already postponed a number of games, including Man City-Real Madrid and Juventus-Lyon.
A number of other professional sports leagues have postponed, canceled or delayed games as a result of the coronavirus.
