Yahoo Finance Premier League approves trial of concussion substitutes
The Premier League has agreed to trial the use of concussion substitutes.
No start date has been given for when the trial will take place, with the final details still be sorted with Ifab and Fifa.
It was earlier this year that the game’s lawmakers, Ifab, approved the trialling of concussion substitutes following consultation with a number of stakeholders.
Competitions and tournaments are now open to introducing the new law and it will be in use during next month’s Fifa Club World Cup.
Fifa will implement a protocol in which each team will be permitted to use a maximum of one concussion substitute in a match; this substitution will be able to be made regardless of the number of substitutes already used.
The Premier League’s use of the new law will be different to that, with teams allowed to make a maximum of two concussion substitutes.
The additional concussion substitutions, however, like with the Club World Cup, may be made regardless of the number of substitutions a team has made already.
In a statement the Premier League said: “Premier League Shareholders today formally agreed to introduce the International Football Association Board’s (IFAB) additional permanent concussion substitutions trial.
“The trial will be confirmed when the implementation of the reporting processes, including private medical information, has been resolved with IFAB and FIFA.
“With player welfare the Premier League’s priority, the protocols will allow a maximum of two concussion substitutes to be used per team, with the opposition side able to use the equivalent number.
“The trial is a result of the IFAB’s consultation with stakeholders and recommendations from their concussion expert group to allow additional substitutions for players with actual or suspected concussion.”
