People are bidding thousands for photos of the Playstation 5

It’s not unusual to see in-demand gaming consoles for sale on online auctions sites selling for much more than their original value.

Gamers who missed out on first run or limited edition purchases will pay more than the RRP, desperate to be one of the first to get their hands on the latest gaming technology.

However there is a new type of grifter online who is managing to trick gamers out of thousands of dollars for just a picture of the new PS5.

An auction labeled ‘Photo Of Brand New PS5 Disc Edition (A4 Photo)’ is for sale at the starting price of $700.84.

Searching ‘PS5’ in eBay will bring up many of the consoles for sale but some require the bidder to pay a little more attention to the fine print.

Currently, an auction labelled ‘Photo Of Brand New PS5 Disc Edition (A4 Photo)’ is for sale at the starting price of $700.84.

Even with details of the listing clearly stating it is only for a A4 photo of the PS5, 17 people are eagerly awaiting the end of the auction.

Meanwhile another seller offering a photo of the PS5 has actually attracted eight bids and is sitting at £1,320.00 (A$2,395).

While it’s yet to be determined if any of these sales actually went through and money exchanged hands, none of them seem to violate eBay’s terms and conditions as they all clearly state the auction is for a photograph or printed image of the PS5.

The PS5 retails for $749.95 and the PS5 Digital Edition for $599.95 in Australia. Both have been sold out since they launched earlier this month.

In a separate issue, gamers who placed orders for the console with Amazon reported receiving bags of pet food or kitchen appliances such as an air fryer, or griller in place of the PS5.

In a statement to Newsweek, an Amazon spokesperson apologised and said the company is investigating what had happened with the orders.

"We're all about making our customers happy, and that hasn't happened for a small proportion of these orders," the spokesperson said.

"We're really sorry about that and are investigating exactly what's happened. We're reaching out to every customer who's had a problem and made us aware so we can put it right. Anyone who has had an issue with any order can contact our customer services team for help."
