Do Pentamaster International's (HKG:1665) Earnings Warrant Your Attention?

For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it completely lacks a track record of revenue and profit. But as Warren Buffett has mused, 'If you've been playing poker for half an hour and you still don't know who the patsy is, you're the patsy.' When they buy such story stocks, investors are all too often the patsy.

So if you're like me, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like Pentamaster International (HKG:1665). While profit is not necessarily a social good, it's easy to admire a business than can consistently produce it. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, unless its owners have an endless appetite for subsidizing the customer, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else breathe its last breath.

Pentamaster International's Improving Profits

Over the last three years, Pentamaster International has grown earnings per share (EPS) like young bamboo after rain; fast, and from a low base. So I don't think the percent growth rate is particularly meaningful. As a result, I'll zoom in on growth over the last year, instead. Like a wedge-tailed eagle on the wind, Pentamaster International's EPS soared from RM0.045 to RM0.073, in just one year. That's a commendable gain of 63%.

One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. The good news is that Pentamaster International is growing revenues, and EBIT margins improved by 11.4 percentage points to 27%, over the last year. Ticking those two boxes is a good sign of growth, in my book.

Are Pentamaster International Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Like that fresh smell in the air when the rains are coming, insider buying fills me with optimistic anticipation. Because oftentimes, the purchase of stock is a sign that the buyer views it as undervalued. However, small purchases are not always indicative of conviction, and insiders don't always get it right.

We haven't seen any insiders selling Pentamaster International shares, in the last year. So it's definitely nice that Non-Executive Director Kean Yong Leng bought RM383k worth of shares at an average price of around RM0.96.

Is Pentamaster International Worth Keeping An Eye On?

For growth investors like me, Pentamaster International's raw rate of earnings growth is a beacon in the night. Not only is that growth rate rather juicy, but the insider buying makes my mouth water. So on this analysis I believe Pentamaster International is probably worth spending some time on. While we've looked at the quality of the earnings, we haven't yet done any work to value the stock. So if you like to buy cheap, you may want to check if Pentamaster International is trading on a high P/E or a low P/E, relative to its industry.
