As babies grow, they want to move around and it’s a parents job to help them on this journey. In this week’s episode of In The Know: Milestones, pediatric occupational therapist Rachel Coley discusses the best products to help your baby develop their motor skills.
“A lot of what a newborn is doing is working through all their infant reflexes and uncurling from that squished up womb position and really just wiggling and moving their body,” Coley says.
Coley explains that when babies start to move their bodies more and have the freedom, they’ll start to do so with purpose. With toys and their overall environment, babies begin to understand how they can move through the world with intention.
“In those early weeks, fine motor and gross motor [skills] are really the same things because it’s this big body movement that really sets the foundation that will then allow the fine motor movement to come,” Coley explains.
