A Northern Territory parent has taken an unusual approach to discipline, by listing their child for sale on Gumtree for a mere $50.

The post appeared at around 9pm Saturday night and read: “Kid for sale fitty [sic] bucks,” the NT News reports.

“Can deliver/drop off.”

“Or pick up.”

“Gender male.”

“Identifies as a three meter flatty (fish).”

The post also featured a picture of the child looking away from the camera and a pick-up address.

However the post - which listed the child under the ‘outdoor toys’ category - has since been taken down.

The post contravened Gumtree’s terms of use, which ban the sale of “blood, bodily fluids and body parts”, as well as advertisements for “adoption or surrogacy”.

“Gumtree is a community marketplace which connects buyers and sellers in the local community, and allows users to trade within the confines of the law. We rely on our users’ feedback to keep the platform safe and we do not tolerate these types of adverts on Gumtree,” a statement from Gumtree provided to Yahoo Finance read.

”We have a variety of measures in place to ensure they do not make it on to the platform and work closely with law enforcement agencies to share information. We strongly encourage our engaged community to report any concerning listings believed to be unlawful in any way.

“Our ‘report ad’ function and 24/7 live chat means our community support team are always available to answer questions and take down any listings reported that are unlawful.”
