FIRST ON 7: The Shahin family has spoken to 7News about its plans to build South Australia’s biggest motorsport complex at Tailem Bend.
It owns the Peregrine Corporation which has just bought the old Mitsubishi test track, and plans to spend $40 million turning it into a world class motoring facility.
Sam Shahin is not only one of the state’s most successful businessmen, he is also a dedicated motoring enthusiast.
“We are absolutely starved in South Australia for a top notch facility that caters for all motoring enthusiasts,” Mr Shahin said.
Recreation and Sport Minister Leon Bignell said: “One thing I know about Sam, he’s passionate about South Australia and he’s passionate about motorsport, so I think it’s great that he’s been the successful bidder for the land.”
Training tracks for motorbikes, four-wheel-drives, police and car manufacturers are a top priority, while club racing, drag racing and even V8 Supercars are also planned.
Construction is set to start within months and the gates could be open in a year.
The Peregrine Corporation is the largest private employer in South Australia owning 100 ‘On The Run’ service stations, and it plans to build another at the Tailem Bend track.
“We invite anybody who has an interest in seeing a great motoring complex developed in South Australia to get in touch with us,” Mr Shahin said.
