Oodies, cosy loungewear and UGGs: Aussie winter essentials

Winter is only a few weeks away, and as the chilly mornings and nights really take hold, Aussies are reaching for everything cosy and comfy to cuddle up on the couch with.
Luckily for us, there’s been an explosion of loungewear and the like on the market thanks to the work from home revolution and snap Covid lockdowns forcing us all to stay indoors, so there’s plenty of choice around.
Here we’ve done the hard work for you and sifted through the best winter warmers around online - enjoy!
Hooded blankets - aka Oodies - are all the rage
Dressing gowns are so 2010s. Now everyone’s cosying up in hooded blankets, which - as the name suggests - are wearable blankets with sleeves and hoods.
They first burst onto the scene in 2017 when US brand The Comfy debuted on Shark Tank, and the idea has since enjoyed an exponential rise in popularity, with stay at home orders meaning people want to be as comfortable as possible indoors.
In Australia, the largest range of prints and colours in wearable blankets are available at Oodie. Their product is made of a super soft sherpa fleece on the inside, and flannel fleece on the outside, and retail for $109.
If you're not just shopping for yourself, twin packs are currently on sale for $158 rather than the usual $218.
Bonds, Cotton On, Adairs and Amazon Australia also stock hooded blankets ranging in price from $45 to $99.
For an even more budget option, Kmart has a $29 design in navy blue that shoppers have been going wild over, and Big W has one for $40, however, some shoppers have complained that the quality of the cheaper designs isn’t as nice as some of the more expensive brands, which is to be expected.
Slippers
We all know you lose heat out of your extremities, so keeping your toes toasty is a priority if you want to save on your energy bills this winter.
While in most parts of Australia it’s still a bit early to pull out your full UGG boots, it’s definitely chilly enough to be slipping into some fluffy slides.
Crossover slippers are everywhere at the moment and look super cute with your loungewear.
You can pick up a pair for as little as $6 at Kmart, while this luxe $60 pair from Emu Australia has grippy soles that are designed to be worn inside and outside the house. It’s also made from 100% Australian sheepskin that wicks away moisture so your slippers don’t get gross from overuse.
For something extra stylish, go for monogrammed slippers. Cotton On has a $30 pair of crossover slippers that can be personalised with a monogram if you order online, while Melbourne label Monte do super stylish monogrammed loafers for $165.
Their slippers are made of a luxurious velvet with leather soles so you don’t need to take them off if you’re ducking down to the shops.
Alternatively, if you’re up for a bit of DIY and have access to a Cricut machine, you can monogram your own slippers using iron on vinyl, provided the material of your slippers is suitable.

Microwavable slippers are another trend taking off this winter. Adding a little novelty to your wardrobe, they’re just like regular slippers except they can be warmed up in the microwave for maximum cosiness when your feet are feeling like icicles.
These Oprah-approved babies have dried millet seeds and french lavender filled into the lining so that when you zap them for a minute, they can keep your toes toasty for up to an hour.
If you’re after something a little more heavy duty, these slip on scuffettes from UGG are an old faithful and are currently on sale for $96, while Kogan have these knockoff designs on sale for just $35.
Oodie has also just released a new collaboration with Original UGG Boots Australia, so you can match your footwear to your hooded blanket if you so wish.
Loungewear that isn't limited to the lounge room
After a particularly dreary summer and with the promise of a long winter ahead, many are making like Kim Kardashian and preparing to be as cosy as possible in a fluffy loungewear set.
The reality TV star's brand SKIMS has a wide-legged pair of knit pants with a matching wrap top, that are made from boucléd polyester and nylon that’s super warm and cosy.
The set retails for $240 and can be bought from the US SKIMS website, as they ship to Australia, or NET-A-PORTER.
For a much more affordable take on the trend, Nasty Gal has slashed the price on its fluffy knit wide leg lounge set which is currently priced at $42 for both the sweater and pants, rather than the usual $116.
Loungewear that’s cosy enough to be worn inside but nice enough to walk out of the house in, is also everywhere.
Lunya has a super stylish set of organic pima cotton loungewear that includes a flattering and comfortable pair of wide leg pants and an easy fit tee.
Meanwhile, Forever New has a wool-blend, batwing jumper and matching trouser set that pairs perfectly with sneakers when you need to leave home.
If sustainability is a priority, US brand Wolven makes its loungewear out of recycled plastic bottles and removes half a kilo of waste from our oceans with every purchase.
While locally, Aussie label Boody uses bamboo as a more water wise and sustainable alternative to cotton, and donates one percent of online sales back to non profits that protect the environment.
