Yahoo Finance Watch: Ole Miss players ask Lafayette County Board of Supervisors to approve removal of Confederate statue
Ole Miss athletes want a Confederate statue to be removed from Oxford Square. A group of Ole Miss athletes released a video Saturday, urging the Lafayette County Board of Supervisors to get rid of the statue.
The video comes days after the Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning Board of Trustees voted to relocate a different statue on Ole Miss’ campus. That statue will be moved to a cemetery on campus.
The athletes said they were “excited” to hear that news, and want the Lafayette County Board of Supervisors to do the same to the statue in Oxford Square.

Under Mississippi law, the county needs to approve the removal or relocation of any Confederate monument, according to the Oxford Eagle.
Though Confederate monuments have sometimes been the target of ire across the country, Mississippi currently has strict laws to prevent the removal of the structures, or make it difficult to do so. Any decision regarding the statue on the Square would have to be made by the county as it rests on county (and not Oxford) property.
The Board of Supervisors will hold a meeting Monday to hear arguments on the matter. The board is not expected to take a vote at that meeting.
Ole Miss football head coach Lane Kiffin offered his support, saying he’s proud the players are trying to make Oxford “a better place for everyone.”
