Ohio State RB Trey Sermon leaves national championship game loss with apparent injury

One of Ohio State’s top players appeared in just one series of Monday night’s title game.

Trey Sermon, OSU’s star running back, left the first quarter of the College Football Playoff national championship game after taking a hard hit on his first carry of the game. He never returned as the Buckeyes lost 52-24 to Alabama.

Sermon was hurt on the first play of the game when he gained two yards.

Sermon then went into the locker room after Ohio State’s first series. The ESPN broadcast said at the start of the second quarter that Sermon had been taken to a local hospital for further evaluation of the apparent shoulder or collarbone injury.

Sermon, a transfer from Oklahoma, has been a standout performer for the Buckeyes in recent games. He rushed for a whopping 331 yards and two touchdowns in the win over Northwestern in the Big Ten title game. Sermon followed that up with 193 rushing yards, 61 receiving yards and a touchdown in the CFP semifinal win over Clemson.

With Sermon sidelined, Ohio State turned to Master Teague, who entered with 449 yards and six touchdowns on the season. Teague finished the game with 15 carries for 65 yards and two touchdowns as Ohio Stae couldn’t keep up with Alabama’s explosive offense.
