The Chicago Bears needed a lot to go right to beat the New Orleans Saints on Sunday. They had a trick play in their bag to hit a big score, and it developed perfectly when they called it.
Everything was according to plan, except the catch.
Mitchell Trubisky lined up as a receiver, and the Bears ran a double reverse with him passing deep downfield to Javon Wims. It was a great play call and Wims was wide open. Trubisky threw a great pass to the end zone. It was right on target.
Wims dropped it.
You won’t see a professional drop a pass right on the money like Wims did.
The drop got even worse when the Bears failed to pick up a first down when they went for it on fourth-and-4, a few plays after Wims’ drop. The Bears eventually lost, 21-9.
The Saints were the superior team in the NFC wild-card matchup and took a quick 7-0 lead. The Bears couldn’t afford to fall behind too much, and that’s why they unveiled their trick play in the first quarter. Everything was perfect, except the outcome.
